Client Use Cases

Healthcare

Southeastern Medical University

This Medical University was faced with the need to meet all HIPAA regulations, which required doctors to log off of their current application while they moved around the hospital. This required them to continually sign on and off which was extremely time consuming, not to mention cumbersome: doctors often had many different passwords which were dependent on what system they needed to access. By implementing the Sun Java™ System Identity Management product, single sign-on became an option; creating huge efficiency gains.

They considered several options for their identity management solution. In choosing Sun Microsystems, they gained substantial savings over other vendors due to Sun’s extremely attractive educational pricing structure.

Higher Education

Major State University System

A large state university system, one of the most diverse in the country, was faced with the challenge of managing and facilitating student, employee, faculty and staff transactions and access control for each campus; therefore, at each campus several systems were maintained. The decision was made to address the issues of account management (password resets, provisioning, etc.), compliance with government regulations, and access control (single sign-on) at two of the campuses initially.

The installation of Sun’s Java™ System Identity Management system at these two campuses provided a complete, integrated solution that was also modular and integratable. Because all of Sun’s identity management products are designed to work together (while at the same time be deployed individually) the school could choose to implement those components that best met their needs: one campus was able to replace its “home-grown” solution while the other changed out its extensively manual system. Leveraging the implementations at both campuses, the stage has been set for other schools in the system to model individual initiatives after their predecessors.

Government

Southwestern County

One of the country’s fastest growing counties (with an annual growth rate of over 6%) faced the need to effectively and efficiently expand the services that it was offering. The county is currently using Sun’s Identity Management Suite to provide the security and access control to critical information resources to its 1,100 employees. AegisUSA was brought in to evaluate the system and advise the county as to how best expand the system to provide access to an additional 50,000 users (residents of the county.) The county estimates that the user base may well grow to over 100,000 constituents.

Using best practice methodology, AegisUSA set the strategy for the successful growth of the system while meeting the clients’ need for self-service capabilities and reduced help desk calls.
